How to Play Classic Boomers

Classic Boomers is a free Bomberman game you play in the browser. This guide covers the rules, the controls on PC and mobile, every powerup, and a few tricks that win matches.

The rules in 30 seconds

Every match is played on a 15 by 13 grid. Solid pillars never move, breakable crates block the way until you blow them up. Each player starts in a corner. Drop bombs to clear crates, grab the powerups that fall out, and catch your opponents in an explosion. The last player standing wins the round.

  • Bombs explode three seconds after you drop them.
  • Explosions travel in four directions and stop at solid walls.
  • Chain reactions are real: a bomb caught in a blast explodes immediately.
  • Walking into your own explosion counts. Keep an escape route open.

Controls on PC

All bindings can be changed in the Settings screen, which is handy when four people share one keyboard. See our guide to same-keyboard local multiplayer.

Controls on mobile

On phones and tablets a virtual D-pad appears on the left and a bomb button on the right. There is nothing to install. Open classic-boomers.com in Safari or Chrome and tap Play. More details on the mobile page.

Powerups

  • Extra bomb: carry one more bomb at a time. Stacks.
  • Fire: each explosion reaches one tile further in every direction.
  • Speed: move faster. Great for dodging, dangerous when you overshoot.

You can also kick bombs: walk into a bomb and it slides until it hits something. Use it to push a bomb toward a cornered opponent, or to get a bomb away from yourself.

Tips that actually win matches

  1. Open up your corner first. Two or three crates give you room to dodge.
  2. Grab Fire early. Longer explosions mean more crates per bomb and more map control.
  3. Never place a bomb in a dead end you are standing in.
  4. Trap, do not chase. Drop a bomb at the only exit of a corridor and wait.
  5. Against the Hard bot, play patient. It dodges well but it still has to walk past your bombs.

Playing against AI bots

No friends online right now? Add bots to your lobby. Easy bots wander and drop the occasional bomb, Medium bots hunt powerups and avoid explosions, Hard bots actively trap players. You can mix bots and human players in one match.

Ready? It takes ten seconds to start a match.
